A study was conducted on behalf of the Austrian regulatory authority, E-Control, to assess the current state and potentials of the electricity metering system. The study covers various aspects, including an overview of the currently used electricity metering systems, national and international requirements for smart meters, and considerations regarding future network utilization in the distribution grid.

By combining industry expertise from meter manufacturers and grid operators, actionable recommendations are derived for the future requirements of smart meters. The aim is to leverage the potential of existing technologies to facilitate the ongoing energy transition.
